Ripley, a town in Somerset County was incorporated December 11, 1816 from township T5 R5 NWP. In 1834 it provided land to form Cambridge, and in 1862 it ceded some land to St. Albans.

Settled possibly as early as 1801, the town was named in honor of Eleazer Wheelock Ripley (1782-1839), a graduate of Dartmouth College and a distinguished officer in the War of 1812.

This rural small town town lies east of Harmony on Maine Route 154, with connections to routes 23 and 152.

Ripley is a half-township, but not in the usual sense of a 3 by 6 mile rectangle. It and neighboring Cambridge are divided diagonally by the Sebasticook River, which runs from northeast to southwest.
