Gorham is a town in Cumberland County, incorporated on October 30, 1764 from Gorhamtown Plantation. In succeeding years, it annexed land from Standish (1831, 1839) and from Scarborough (1864).
First called Narragansett Number 7, it was granted to men who had fought in the Narragansett War of 1675 and to their heirs.
Gorham Academy, founded in 185, became the Western State Normal School, the University of Maine at Gorham, and now the Gorham Campus of the University of Southern Maine.
The home of former governor Percival P. Baxter has been a museum of Indian artifacts and rare coins.
